The St. Louis Symphony Orchestra announced conductor Erin Freeman as its next director of the St. Louis Symphony Chorus. The appointment, which begins with the 2024-’25 season, is only the third director in the chorus’s 50-year history.

In her new role, Freeman will lead the choral preparations for Music Director Stéphane Denève. Works on the upcoming season calendar that feature the St. Louis Symphony Chorus include Mozart’s Requiem, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, and a fully staged (with puppets!) performance of Grieg’s “Peer Gynt.”

Freeman will continue to serve as artistic director of The City Choir of Washington, artistic director of Wintergreen Music, and principal conductor of the Richmond Ballet. She has guest conducted the Kennedy Center Opera House orchestra, the Detroit Symphony, and the Buffalo Philharmonic, among others. She also guest directed in St. Louis as recently as February 2024, preparing the St. Louis Symphony Chorus for a performance of Fauré’s Requiem.

Freeman grew up in Atlanta, where she cites legendary choral conductor Robert Shaw as a very early influence on her path into music.
