The Sphinx Organization, a Detroit-based non-profit dedicated to supporting the development of Black and Latino musicians, announced its 2025 Medals of Excellence honorees. Soprano Gabriella Reyes, pianist Clayton Stephenson, and violinist and composer Curtis Stewart (pictured left to right) each received the medal and a $50,000 career grant for “artistic excellence, outstanding work ethic, determination, and ongoing commitment to leadership and their communities.”

The Sphinx Medal of Excellence is the organization’s highest honor, given annually to early-career Black and Latino classical musicians who are engaged in exceptional and transformative work in their communities. Past recipients who have gone on to notable careers include clarinetist Anthony McGill (2012), composer Gabriela Frank (2013), soprano Janai Brugger (2015), pianist and composer Lara Downes (2016), and many others.

This year’s three recipients will be honored in a ceremony in April 2025.
