The Metropolitan Opera in New York announced it increased ticket sales to 72% of capacity during the 2023-’24 season, up from 66% last year and the highest since the pandemic. Although the box office is still down approximately 3% from pre-pandemic levels, the Met saw a significant rise in younger audiences and new ticket buyers. Notably, 25% of ticket buyers attended one of the Met’s six contemporary operas presented during the season.

Why it matters:

  • Audience growth and demographics: The increase in ticket sales, especially among younger audiences, indicates a successful effort in attracting new opera fans, which is crucial for the long-term sustainability of the art form.
  • Financial stability and strategic adjustments: Despite ongoing financial challenges, the Met’s strategic measures, such as consulting for cost reductions and boosting fundraising, show a proactive approach to ensuring financial health and adaptability in a post-pandemic landscape.
