The Philadelphia Orchestra today named Marin Alsop as its new principal guest conductor, the first woman to hold this position at Philadelphia’s most prestigious ensemble.
Alsop’s tenure begins in the 2024-2025 season and will last three years, coming at a time when Music Director Yannick Nezet-Séguin continues to extend himself with frequent commitments at the Metropolitan Opera, Orchestre Métropolitain in Montréal, and elsewhere around the world. It’s likely that Alsop will be quite busy.
The Philadelphia Orchestra notes Alsop has a long history with the organization, spanning 32 concerts since her first appearance in 1990. In the 2022-2023 season, she stepped in for Nézet-Séguin at the last minute to lead a well received performance of Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring, and in 2023 she led the Philadelphia Orchestra’s second annual Pride Concert featuring works by LGBTQ+ composers and allies.
