Chandos Records is sold

Chandos Records, one of the most prominent remaining independent classical labels, has been acquired by Klaus Heymann, founder of Naxos. The sale is the latest in a series of independent label acquisitions in the fast-changing market for classical recordings.

Why it matters:

  • Preservation of Legacy: The acquisition ensures the preservation of Chandos’s legacy as a stalwart in classical music recording, maintaining its commitment to artistic freedom and quality. The label is well known as the home of major artists such as Mariss Jansons, Neeme Järvi, Edward Gardner, and others.
  • Continuity of Artistic Vision: Chandos founder Ralph Couzens’ decision to stay on as Managing Director under Heymann’s ownership ensures continuity in the artistic vision and dedication to the label’s artists and creative team.
  • Independent Label Landscape: With the acquisitions of Hyperion (by Universal), BIS (by Apple), and now Chandos, the classical music industry’s independent label landscape is quickly shifting, signifying potential changes in the market dynamics of recording and distribution within the genre.
